Aboriginal People and Strength Based Practices Within a Drug and Alcohol Setting

June 14 in Sydney

This workshop, hosted by the Network of Alcohol and other Drug Agencies (NADA) is intended for people working in the alcohol and other drug sector (AOD) who have Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients.

This workshop is a follow-up workshop for people who have already completed the Aboriginal Cultural Awareness Workshop.

Upon completion, participants will have a greater understanding of:

  • traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander practices and AOD
  • the role of alcohol in Australia since colonisation
  • current statistics around Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and AOD
  • impacts of alcohol consumption on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • effects of high risk consumption of alcohol
  • effects of illicit drug use and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • why some Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people drink and/or take drugs
  • the media and public perceptions.

The workshop will use practical strategies and skills, such as case studies, action plans and tools and resources.

The workshop is free of charge to NADA members.

The addicted brain

This is a free online course which runs over 7 weeks and estimates at 3-4 hours work a week. This is a course about addiction to drugs and other behaviors. It will describe what happens in the brain and how this information helps us deal with and overcome addiction. It will also discuss other topics such as government policy and our vulnerability to take drugs.
